Green Survey Results

The National Real Estate Investor recently conducted a survey of corporate users and commercial real estate developers about Green buildings.

The results demonstrate the increasing awareness and interest in green facilities. Corporate users expect growth in green facilities from 9% to 21% of their occupancy over the next 5 years while Developers expect a similar increase in their portfolios from 9% to 20%.

Almost 50% of the respondents indicated that green design was either important or extremely important to them, and many indicated a willingness to pay more for green.

Not surprisingly, energy efficiency is cited as the most important factor by corporate users when choosing green buildings, at almost 81%. The next important factor is water efficiency and indoor air quality.

Top 10 Issues

These Top 10 issues come from an association that focuses on educational facilities, but as you can see, they can apply to anyone managing properties.

They confirm that managing physical space is essentially the same regardless of whether you are managing corporate facilities or commercial properties.

The list was put forward by APPA, the North American association for educational facilities in their '2007 Thought Leaders Series' report:

Balancing & Articulating Expectations
Integrating with IT
Focusing on the Customer
Aligning Facilities Planning with Institutional Goals
Making Master Planning Effective
Implementing Total Cost of Ownership Strategies
Managing Maintenance and Adaptive Reuse
Instituting Metrics for Performance Measurement

Can you make a Decision?
Most Property and Facility Managers are inundated with data and information on a daily basis yet not much of it helps you make decisions.

The fundamental problem is having lots of data and information because that's a good thing, yet very little of it actually helps you make effective decisions. Either it's still just data, isn't the right kind of informaiton or it isn't analyzed properly.

The next time you consider implementing a process, system, reporting, survey or other means to gather and track data or information, take a step back and ask the fundamental question: Will this data or information help me make decisions that will improve services and reduce costs? Understanding the answer to that question puts you in a better position to get the information you need to make decisions that make a difference.

Successful managers understand this issue and focus only on information they need to make decisions. Eliminate the clutter and improve your decision making.
