Article # 1 : Communicating for FM: Not English 101
I recently delivered a workshop on Strategic Writing to a group of FM professionals. It’s the same workshop I’ve given for other Property Management and Facility Management organizations who want to elevate their ability to write well, present a good image and influence others.
Some of the participants had the same concern others have had related to memo’s or letters. The approach I teach is focused primarily on communicating information and influencing the reader to do what you want, whether it’s agreement, approval or to follow directions. Since the writing has a clear purpose, I teach techniques that support the purpose. Every Facility Management professional needs to know how to communicate effectively to be successful yet this soft skill is often overlooked........

Article # 2: Managing Performance
You may have already read my articles and information about managing performance on my website or in magazines I contribute to. I always make the distinction between measuring performance (i.e. KPI's, etc.) and managing performance. One gives you data, the other gives you results.

Article # 3 : Leadership in Energy & Envirionmental Design
This fall, the Canada Green Building Council (CaGBC) released the Canadian version of the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) LEED EBOM (Existing Building : Operations & Maintenance) certification rating system.
LEED stands for Leadership In Energy and Environmental Design system and is the most prominent rating system in Canada for green buildings.
It’s a pretty comprehensive system and because it is quite rigorous both in the standards and in the certification process, it’s a relatively expensive process, but the principles are what every Facility Manager or Property Manager should be applying in their buildings. Even if you are located in another part of the world, read the guides to see what else you can do.
The USGBC and CaGBC have had a certification system for new construction LEED NC as well as LEED CI for Commercial Interiors for a while. The LEED EBOM certification has been available in the US for a while. Since the system is very rigorous, adjustments to match Canadian standards, building codes and other issues was necessary. This Canadian version was written by Halsall, a Canadian Engineering firm.
The certification includes a focus on design issues related to the site that can be difficult to achieve in an existing building, but if you are already seeking LEED NC (new construction) certification, they are mostly covered already. Others are leading practices you should have implemented as part of your management approach and your subcontracting / purchasing policies.

Seminars & Workshops: IFMA World Workplace Benchmarking
I was surprised at how many people attended my seminar on Intelligent Benchmarking & Beyond at IFMA’s World Workplace in Orlando last month. As usual, I brought some take-home material for the audience, but I ran out. In fact, a number of people had to stand at the back of the room.
I think it’s because the topic wasn’t just about traditional benchmarking. I emphasized the ‘Beyond’ part of benchmarking where traditional benchmarking - comparing published results with yours – is only the first step in a process......
