Focus : Developing FM & PM Procedures
While I deal with many Facilities clients who have little if any documented processes, policies and procedures, simply writing detailed documents isn't the answer. You need to write concise, easy to use, easy to reference documents that don't just sit on a shelf.
Having them will definitely improve results, improve consistency, enable training and cross-training, make it easier for someone to fill in for an absence, provide a method for auditing and managing performance and provide a means of explaining / defending your approach to many controversial or unpopular policies.
When doing operational reviews for my clients, not having documented procedures is one of the biggest issues I find. Click Here to read the full Blog article
Writing them is so important that I have a section dedicated to them in my upcoming book, along with how to communicate effectively in writing - a requirement if you expect to get your ideas approved and make positive changes in your organization.
If you need some help putting together your own procedures, email me to discuss how I can help you establish your management framework and develop a template so you have consistent, well developed, easy to use procedures you can use for training, performance management, auditing and consistent service delivery. I even provide training and help you create the procedures themselves.
You may remember one of my articles on communicating was published in Buildings Magazine earlier this year and was selected as the cover article. Click Here to read my Blog about it and click on the magazine cover to read the full article on-line at Buildings Magazine. While you're there, check out their other useful articles.
I'm also delivering a seminar titled "The Write Way to Influence Others and Enhance Image" at the ISSA conference this November in Orlando. Click Here for more info.
Recent Feature Article : Outsourcing Partnership
My article for Building Operating Management Magazine was published in May. This is the second article I've written this year that was chosen by the editors as a feature cover article. They did a great job with the layout and graphics to illustrate the underlying point : Sparring Partners.
The article takes a hard look at the partnership relationship in outsourcing and explores the ingredients required for a real partnership to exist and changes needed in the RFP process and ongoing management of the relationship. I've received lots of positive feedback about the articles on the Facilities related groups on LinkedIn.
Visit my website to read about it and for the link to the full on-line magazine article at Building Operating Management Magazine where you can read other great articles as well. Let me know what you think.

Rewards & Penalties : Lead to Bad Behavior
I've talked about it before - how KPI's and other measurements with rewards and penalties attached can lead to behaviour you didn't expect.
I found a surprising example from the US retailer Kmart. While it isn't directly related to FM, it illustrates the issue very well. Of course, Wall Street is another example, but it doesn't have to involve large payouts to have a potentially negative impact Click Here to read the Blog and see the surprising sign in the Kmart.
Have you read our previous articles on the topic of KPI's and Performance? Take a look around when you visit our blog and our website for other articles. I'll be coveriing this topic in the book as well.
